I raise chickens too. Loss of feathers is normal. Once a year, usually in autumn, the feathers fall out and are renewed-moulting. There is a depluming mite, which burrows into the chicken's skin. To check for lice, look closely at the fluff between the feathers on the underside of the the chicken, around the vent. But don't get them on you! There are pesticides, but an old-time remedy is brushing crank-case oil on perches and into the cracks of the coop. You have probably seen your birds rolling around in the dust--chickens take dust baths to help eliminate parasites.
