Hi Kendara, My suggestions is go out and DO some farming. Start with a
little garden in your back yard. See if you can get a working share CSA I
am sure they'd be glad to have you (I know we would). Or work or volunteer
at another kind of farm. While I think you should stick to your goal I
think you should get as much practical experience as you can in the next 10
years. We are in our second year of a CSA. We went into it with a good
supply of gardening knowledge which was invaluable. But actually growing
and harvesting for customers is alot of work physically (obvious) and
emotionally, we all wanted desperately to do a really good job. Read lots
of gardening etc. books but get out and do some farm work. Beth

of discussion (philosophical as well and statistical and practical ) that I
have seen so far. Although I do not currently farm, I have goaled myself to
be on a small (25-75 acres) farm by the year 2009.

sustainable/organic agriculture as I possibly can. I envision a diversified
small farm specializing in rare and endangered varieties of livestock and
heirloom vegetable crops, which will also include pastures, orchards and
grain fields.

>I'd like to ask those of you who actively farm sustainably what you
consider your most valuable skills and abilities. I'm interested in both
academic skills and learning as well as practical abilities. I suppose that
this may be considered a request for a 10-year course of study on theories
and practices of sustainable agriculture.

>I look forward to learning much more from this list. Thanks, and have a
great weekend!
