I recently subscribed to the list and have been delighted with the quality of discussion (philosophical as well and statistical and practical ) that I have seen so far. Although I do not currently farm, I have goaled myself to be on a small (25-75 acres) farm by the year 2009.
While I wait, my idea is to learn as much as possible about sustainable/organic agriculture as I possibly can. I envision a diversified small farm specializing in rare and endangered varieties of livestock and heirloom vegetable crops, which will also include pastures, orchards and grain fields.
I'd like to ask those of you who actively farm sustainably what you consider your most valuable skills and abilities. I'm interested in both academic skills and learning as well as practical abilities. I suppose that this may be considered a request for a 10-year course of study on theories and practices of sustainable agriculture.
I look forward to learning much more from this list. Thanks, and have a great weekend!
