Roger Beachey in the early 80s was known for "Beachey Blots." These were
smudges on electrophoretic gels which he alleged were something important,
but which few others could be sure were anything other than smudges.
I encountered him on numerous occasions before I had the sense to get out of
genetic engineering. He is like many other gene jockeys: too much hubris
and too lacking in liberal arts education to even know it.
However, in this case, the "Bt gene" inserted in various plants does produce
a protein which causes most of its insecticidal properties. It wouldn't
surprise me at all that he muddied the waters and tried to confuse folks.
He was good at that in the early 80s and has had plenty of time to practice
since then.
But he is probably a fine man who loves his wife and children.
