Between Batman & Robin's (G.G. Liddy and Dennis Avery) collective hot
air
accelerating global warming the resulting early ice age will solve all

Believe it or not "they" are trying to do just that, in 3rd world
countries with malaria-carrying mosquitos. They say DDT works better
than anything else.
Lawrence,
Who is the 'they' that you are referring to? From my understanding of
the regulations surrounding DDT, it is currently legal to use it in the
United States in order to control malaria carrying mosquitos so perhaps this
is not merely a "third world" issue. While the effects of DDT are well
documented some of the alternatives such as deltamethrin and propoxur have
their own negative effects on humans
and environment. These two, along with DDT, were being considered for use
in a recent vector control programme in Madagascar. In the end it was
decided by both the United Nations and World Bank not to use DDT for vector
control.
For those interested in learning more about this issue I would recommend
"Resolving the DDT Dilemma", an excellent publication by the World Wildlife
Federation. This contains information on alternatives to DDT and case
studies of DDT control programmes in developing countries. Another
interesting study by the International Development Research Centre
@www.irdc.ca/instittution/emalaria.html has found that coconuts can combat
malaria.
I would hope that this will make it clear that there is much work being done
on the international level to control malaria without the use of the DDT and
also that we all maintain efforts to provide each other with concise
information rather than broad statements that leave room for
misinterpretation.
