Studies Shows Protecting Farmland Makes Cents

Farms and open lands in Northampton County, Virginia contributed over four times as much
money to the countys tax base in 1998 as they used in services, according to a recent
study by the American Farmland Trust. The study also found that revenues from
residential development in the county were not enough to cover the cost of services
demanded by that land use.

The study, which looked at the costs and revenues associated with different land uses, is
one of 60 Cost of Community Services studies performed in communities nationwide since
1986. By giving county residents current facts on land use to help inform planning
decisions, the studies challenge the assumption that development is always the best land
use option. One example, The Cost of Community Services in Monmouth County New Jersey,
analyzes the cost of Community Services in five New Jersey Townships and proves that
farms and open space are good for the local tax base. It is available for $14.95 by
calling 800-370-4879.
