Last February I was asked to judge student chapter displays at the Society
for Range Management meeting. After viewing the exhibits, I thought the
quality could have been better. I told one of the advisors, "Chuck, someone
needs to write a tip sheet for these students on how to put together a
poster." He said, "Great, let me know when you are finished, and I will
post it on the web." Hmm, I didn't think I had volunteered.
I've put together Come and Look at This One: Tips for Getting Your Poster
Noticed. Because student groups have varying budgets, I outlined the basics
and some options. The document includes recommendations for planning,
organization and design, text, photographs, proofreading questions and
preparation, placement and transportation, presentation day, next steps,
and examples of poster-exhibits.
Lisa Bauer, Communications Specialist for the North Central Sustainable
Agriculture Research and Education Program, was one of my editors. Lisa
said the fact sheet would also benefit farmers who are asked to present
posters. Her comment prompted me to inform Sanet readers.
I would like to thank Lisa Bauer and the SAN program for lending me
pictures of their displays. I would also like to thank Chuck Butterfield,
Chadron State College in Nebraska, for his whiz-bang web skills. You can
view Come and Look at This One: Tips for Getting Your Poster Noticed at
http://www.srm.org/ under the Student Conclave category.
