Generation of farmers endangered by
antitrust inaction, says Senator
More than 400 farmers and rural activists,
including sizable
groups from Kansas, Missouri and Minnesota,
filled an
auditorium in Kirkwood College, Cedar
Rapids, Iowa, on
Tuesday for a town hall meeting on
antitrust and economic
concentration in agriculture. Senators
Grassley and Harkin of
Iowa and Wellstone of Minnesota, Mike Dunn
of USDA, Joel
Klein of the U.S. Department of Justice and
Iowa Attorney
General Tom Miller briefed the audience and
received input
from farmers, academics and the audience.
Senator Wellstone received enthusiastic
audience support for
when he announced he would ask President
Clinton to give a
yes or no answer to his proposal to place a
moratorium on
mergers or acquisitions of companies worth
over $50 million
until Congress can review anti-trust laws
and consider further
legislation. This action is vital, said
Wellstone, because "we are
on course to lose a generation of
producers" if something isn't
done quickly.
