Colleagues,

If you have already responded, thank you.

Two requests for others: 1) we need signatures for a letter to the European
press, and 2) there is still another day or two to contribute financially.
Even very small gifts matter. All I need is pledges right now. I'll let
you know where to send a check.

In the last 24 hours we have raised $3,780 from 37 people and organizations
to help get Jose Bove out of jail. These donations range from $10 to
$1,000. Jose was incarcerated for helping to lead the protest over punitive
tarrifs. As I wrote yesterday, Jose and his neighbors milk sheep for
Roquefort cheese, one of the products attacked by the US govt. in
retaliation for Europe's refusal to admit beef raised with hormones. The
real issues are food sovereignty and limits to the global power of
corporations.

The following is a draft of the statement for which we need signatures:

We citizens of the US join our French colleagues in supporting the rights of
peoples to feed themselves as they choose. We oppose the attempts of global
institutions and national governments to lower food quality and threaten
cultural sovereignty. We agree in particular that citizens of all countries
and their governments have the right to refuse food with hormones and
genetically modified ingredients. We are ourselves farmers, professionals
in agricultural organizations, and supporters of family farmers in the US.
Farmers everywhere struggle for survival, and we consider Jose Bove and his
neighbors to be our neighbors.
