I believe that John is correct in his sense. But, this list has been resistant
to any thread which did not appear to be directly applicable in the field or in
the marketplace. Yet, if John is right in his premises, then all of the current
practices must be informed by underlying metaphysical constructs such as a
definition of sustainability and/or a concept of the "sacred", however it is
termed.

In fact, the concept of family farms and rural community are not informed just
by pragmatic facts, but, indeed, are severely tempered by an underlying
philosophical position which can be decoupled, often, from basic environmental
practices.
