Hello sanet:

I am interested in growing fava beans over the winter in Connecticut =
(USDA zone 6). I am growing them as a cover crop, but what I am =
particularly interested in is growing a good crop of bean aphids and =
lady beetles to use in my experiments next year. Therefore, I want fava =
beans I can plant now that will survive the winter, if possible.

In looking through "Managing Cover Crops Profitably," the information =
sheets from SARE about cover crops in the Northeast U.S., and various =
seed catalogs and extension publications, I get the impression that =
survival of fava beans over the winter here is uncertain, but that there =
may be cold-hardy varieties that can make it.

Does anyone have experience with growing fava beans over the winter, =
recommendations of cold-hardy varieties, and sources of seed? The =
temperature here in the winter usually gets down to 0 degrees F. (about =
-18 degrees C., I think) at least briefly and snow cover is unreliable.

Thanks for any help.
