Misinformation

Various lists have shared an important Reuters World Report story dated
Monday, Aug. 23, 1999 (we'll post it to Ag BioTech InfoNet soon). It is
entitled "Japan label plan seen affecting U.S. GM crop output."

The story has solid, up to date data on trade, GMO plantings, etc, and
this passage:

"Traders estimate purchasing costs for U.S. corn by Japanese end-users
could rise as much as 50 percent if they seek non-GM crops. As for U.S.
soybeans, purchasing costs by Japanese users are expected to rise by about
30 percent."

In the last few weeks I have spoken to several companies/people shipping
non-GMO corn and soybeans to Europe and Japan. They appreciate very much
the misinformation campaign that the grain trade and biotech industry is
engaged in re the high costs of procuring non-GMO grain, since it makes the
modest premiums they are asking for seem extremely reasonable.

The GMO/biotech industry and proponents keep asking "why do people not
trust us when we say we've tested the food...its safe...etc.?" I think it
has something to do with the repeated lack of basic honesty in various
industry pronouncements.
