Mark -

You'll want to check out the Mid-Atlantic Biodynamic Farming and Food
Conference Oct 1-3 outside of Washington DC in Charles Town, WV (just off
I-81)

The 'title' of the conference is 'Restorative Agriculture and Traditional
Nutrition' and speakers are carefully chosen to complement both of these
topics.

Joel Salatin, author of "You Can Farm" and popular proponent of
'relationship marketing,' will be spending an entire day doing lectures and
demonstrations at the conference this year; Vinnie McKinnie, featured in
the 'Christmas' Seeds of Change catalog, will be doing workshops on seed
starting and propagating herbs, Jim Foltz, a protege of Jim Duke, will be
teaching medicinal tincture making; Hugh Lovel of Union Agriculture
Institute will be teaching how to use the 'horn clay' BD preparation to
promote the balancing of energies on the farm; Hugh Courtney, Director of
the Josephine Porter Institute of Applied Biodynamics will discuss making
and using the biodynamic preparations; Gary Puterka of the USDA will be
doing a workshop on the whys and how of using the remarkable kaolin clay
sprays for boosting production in organic orchards; traditional
nutritionist Sally Fallon will be presenting on 'The Ploy of Soy' and
helping growers think of new ways to keep 'the value added' closer to home;
there will be an entire series of workshops on 'Small-Scale Production of
Small Grains,' hosted by appropriate technology guru Eugene Canales,
featuring Greg Shultz of NewFarms (Greg's non-profit has pulled together a
coalition of small farms in the SW which produce small grains for feed
sales and now own their own bakery to capture that 'value added' income)
and focusing not just on the hort aspects of small grain production, but
also on the technology appropriate for small farms; Jim Barlow will do
several presentations on the "soil life food web," a more 'practical' way
to determine which amendments to add in order to balance soils; Dan Carlson
of Sonic Bloom fame will be doing a workshop on the use and wonders of
Sonic Bloom; the USDA's local fruit research station is represented by
presentations on using beneficials to help in post harvest handling of
fruits and vegetables and in IPM for the orchard floor (this is only a
small portion of the speakers. I apologize to anyone I have left off this
'short' response). If this weren't enough, all meals will be prepared of
biodynamic/organic ingredients by Chef's Collaborative 2000 Chef Peter
Berley of NYC's Angelica Kitchen.

Attendence at this conference w.b. a great way to get a well-rounded and
informed view of what's going on in the branch of organic vegetable/fruit
production known as 'restorative agriculture' ie builds topsoil while
producing high value crops. (To my knowledge, the phrase 'restorative
agriculture' was coined by Kenny Ausbel, founder of the BIONEERS
conference.)

I've put a temporary webpage up at http://www.igg.com/bdnow/bdconf There is
also a pdf brochure at http://www.igg.com/bdnow

Of course, this is a biased report, since I am the conference organizer. ;-)
