Mike,

You're right about the Soil Conservation Service introducing kudzu for
erosion control. The Forestry Service was in on it, too. I met a man in
California who is retired from the Forestry Service and he admitted,
with great guilt and copious apologies, that he was one of those
primarily responsible for introducing kudzu.

To take your suggestion one step further, I suggest using goats to get
rid of kudzu. When we bought our property, there was kudzu bordering a
peninsula of land on 3 sides. It was growing up the fences and on the
adjoining property but not on our land. I found out the reason when the
neighbor, who was taking care of the property while it was empty, told
me he had goats in that area and they preferred the kudzu.

Also, does anybody have some common names for Paulownia trees? Are these
sometimes called "Tree of Heaven" or "Stinkweed Tree"?

Alex
