Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Value-Added Agent
Position Description
August 6, 1999

STATUS: This is a full time, professional MSU Extension position with
a programmatic link to MSU=s educational resources, research and technical
assistance for agriculture and natural resources businesses and value-added
development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A key responsibility of the position will be to link MSU=s value-added
agriculture and natural resources expertise to entrepreneurs, communities
and industry initiatives. In that capacity, this agent will work with MSU
colleagues in designing and coordinating educational and technical
assistance
programs for value-added entrepreneur and agri-business organizations. The
agent will also prepare and present educational material in conferences,
seminars, and workshops. Important characteristics/skills for candidates
are:

An entrepreneur mentality/spirit

Ability to communicate effectively with people involved in agriculture
and natural resources business enterprises

An understanding of business development, organization and management
systems

The ability to establish and maintain networks

A willingness to seek, interpret and apply information from a variety
of sources (MSU colleagues, industry groups, consultants and others)

Capable of projecting a positive, but realistic attitude on value added,
producer owned cooperatives and related business opportunities

Well developed group facilitation skills

Good organization and priority setting skills

The ability to assist others in the development of strategies and action
plans

In addition, the position serves as a member or resource to MSUE Area of
Expertise teams such as farm management, economic development, community
development and others as appropriate. The agent will also assist and train
MSUE personnel based in counties throughout the state in various roles
including diagnostic work, matters pertaining to value-added initiatives,
echnical assistance, conflict resolution, group decision making, and
business
organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

B.S. Degree (Master=s preferred) in agriculture and natural resources,
business economics or a related field. Five years or more of professional
experience. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the
business community. Ability to analyze and evaluate agriculture and natural
resources related business and value-added opportunities and effectively
present findings and recommendations in writing as well as in oral
presentations. Ability to identify alternative business strategies and to
articulate the implications of each.

Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships with
business
organizations as well as those involved in agriculture and natural resources
industries. Capacity to link industry needs with expertise at MSU and to
apply expert information to local situations. Demonstrated ability to work
collaboratively with MSU Extension personnel as well as with professionals
in
related educational, public sector, and business organizations.

Demonstrated desire and ability to work effectively with others. Ability to
provide Extension education programming leadership. Understanding of and
commitment to equal opportunity, affirmative action and diversity/pluralism.
Effective oral and written communication skills. Well developed computer
skills for use in educational programming and management. Personal
mobility/transportation required (some overnight and other travel required).
Willing to be active in one or more relevant professional organizations and
to maintain and further develop professional competencies (both content and
educator skills).
