Manhattan, KS -- The North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture
Research and Education (NCR SARE) Professional Development
Program (PDP) is offering travel scholarships to individuals and teams of
agricultural educators, cooperative extension personnel,
farmers/ranchers and researchers from across the North Central region to
attend the 7th National Small Farm Trade Show and Conference in
Columbia, Mo. on Nov. 5-6, 1999. The NCR SARE PDP will fund
approximately 50 scholarships to the conference. Scholarships will
provide funds to cover registration, travel expenses and a one year
subscription to Small Farm Today Magazine (maximum $500).
Agricultural information providers and extension educators are important
resources for farmers seeking ways to increase their profitability. The
scholarships to educators, information providers and farmers will expose
them to the practical information and expertise of small farmers
throughout the region who have successfully and profitably created
alternative, sustainable farming systems. The theme for this year’s Small
Farm Today Conference and Trade Show is “Profitable Alternatives for
Family Farms” and will include talks and short courses designed to
provide practical information on alternative paths to profitability. The
keynote speaker is Don Bixby, director of the American Livestock Breeds
Conservancy, an organization that promotes the conservation of rare and
minor breeds of livestock in the U.S.A. Other featured speakers include
Sandie Shores, author of Growing and Selling Fresh Cut Herbs; Ron
Macher, farmer/author of Making Your Small Farm Profitable and editor
of Small Farm Today Magazine; Ben Bartlett, farmer/educator and
grazing expert from Michigan; and Lynn Byczynski, author of The
Flower Farmer and Editor of Growing for Market.
