S. Korea Official Cut Self in Protest
SEOUL, South Korea--The head of a
livestock farmers' association tried to
kill himself during a Parliamentary hearing
Thursday to protest a government plan to
restructure his group.
Shin Koo-bum, head of the Korea
Federation of Livestock Farmers'
Cooperatives, slashed his abdomen with a
knife as lawmakers pondered a bill on the
restructuring, National Assembly officials said.
Shin was rushed to a hospital. The national
station KBS-TV reported that he was not
critically injured.
Despite the bloodshed, the assembly's
Agriculture and Fisheries Committee approved
the bill Shin was protesting. It calls for the
merger of 192 livestock farmers' cooperatives
into the Korea Federation of Agricultural
Cooperatives.
The government pushed the merger to
make the cooperatives more efficient. Shin's
group opposed the restructuring, saying it will
cost the group jobs.
The bill still must pass the Assembly's
plenary session this week to become law.
