Northeast SARE Announces Changes in
Livestock and Forage Funding
The Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program is
initiating changes in its research grant application process in two
areas-livestock management (including small, non-dairy livestock such as
chickens) and forage crops.
"This targeted change is a part of program evolution," said Fred Magdoff,
the regional coordinator for Northeast SARE. "We want to work closely with
applicants in these two areas and discuss our ideas about project outcomes.
By changing the way applications are developed, we hope to improve and
clarify what projects will do."
One result of this change is that all the research grant applicants
in these two areas will now attend a workshop, set for October 27, 1999 in
Albany, New York, to discuss the new application format and to explore the
implications for project design.
"We will still look for projects in applied research with the
primary focus on farmers," Magdoff explains, "and the purpose of this pilot
project is to see how we can use the application process to develop
proposals closer to the SARE mission." That mission is to explore and
support sustainable and innovative farming practices that are profitable,
environmentally sound, and beneficial to the community.
Anyone who plans to develop a Northeast SARE research grant application in
livestock or forage crops should get in touch with the Northeast SARE office
by October 6 to make a workshop reservation. The number is 802/656-0471; the
e-mail address is nesare@zoo.uvm.edu. Northeast SARE will pay for travel to
the workshop and for accommodations; the workshop itself is free.
