Position Announcement
Agricultural Educator - Agricultural Economics
The Berea College Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources seeks an
agricultural educator who can provide leadership in integrating economics
into a program of small-scale sustainable agriculture with emphasis on the
Appalachian region. Applicants are sought with entrepreneurial bent and
experience and skills in (a) adding value to basic agriculture products and
(b) niche marketing in a small-farm context. Understanding of the economic,
social, and environmental implications of food and fiber production is also
sought. Commitment to the purposes of the College and to teaching excellence
in an undergraduate liberal arts environment is essential. Teaching
responsibilities include introductory courses in agricultural economics and
marketing as well as a senior course in farm resource management; other
courses contingent on individual background and interests. Preference will
be given to applicants with additional applied expertise in some area of
agriculture or natural resources. Responsibilities also include integration
of student work and learning through supervision of student-worker
involvement in marketing, economic planning, and sustainable resource
management on the College farms and or forests. Ph.D. preferred, Masters
required; salary and rank commensurate with experience. Duties begin
September, 2000.
Berea College is a four-year institution devoted to undergraduate education
rooted in the liberal arts. The College's mission includes special
commitments to students of limited economic means and high ability, the
Appalachian region, interracial and intercultural education, and the
development of perspectives and values deeply informed by the Christian

livestock operations on 1200 acres of College farms for classroom and
student labor use and has access to 8000 acres of College forest and

animal scientist to provide leadership in integrating livestock and wildlife
into a program of small-scale sustainable agriculture in the Appalachian
region. Applicants are sought who have expertise in livestock production
combined with (a) strong interest in the role of livestock in the
development and holistic management of local, small-scale food production
systems and (b) understanding of the economic, social, and environmental
implications of animal production. Commitment to the purposes of the
College and to teaching excellence in an undergraduate liberal arts
environment is essential. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate
courses involving aspects of livestock production systems; other courses
contingent on individual background and interests. Preference will be given
to applicants with applied expertise in some area of animal production and
management systems, such as; swine, silvo-pastoral, wildlife, aquaculture,
or livestock marketing in a small-farm context. Responsibilities also
include integration of student work and learning through the supervision of
student-worker involvement in livestock production and sustainable resource
management on the College farms and/or forests. Ph.D. or equivalent
expected; salary and rank commensurate with experience. Duties begin
