I know that my parents, missionaries, always helped the natives, directly. But the
mission never got quantity food to distribute, such as sacks of rice. Individual
missionaries could give what theywanted to the poor they encountered. Some poor
from our town's native village would come to our house and sit on the porch. My
parents always gave them what they needed.
What I'd like to do now is go back to Madagascar and teach women to read, so
they could read the Bible--just about the only literature widely available, even
there. I don't think I could ever handle large food distribution, but if any
quantities of rice, manioc, etc ever came my way, I'd certainly know how to make
sure it reached hungry individuals. I can never forget what Isaw, growing up there.
