I want to reiterate that one weed that does cause a huge
problem, at least in Mali and parts of Senegal, is
Striga sp. (in English "witchweed". I could give you
the Wolof name but that would do you little good) a root
parasite that attacks millet, sorghum, etc
Your assessmant of the problems caused by "slash and
burn"(S&B)ag are in line with my experiences in Senegal
Striga thrives in poor, depleted soil...caused largely
by S&B. I'm not sure how biotech can help..make
striga-resistant plants? Sounds possbile, but I would
start with measures that improve soil fertility
first,..and do not make farmers dependent on outside
resources like GE millet and sorghum.
My point is that there is a killer weed that does lead
to hunger in Africa..not thatI agree with Sec. G's
solution
