hemp processing

Hemp keeps coming up as a panacea for tobacco producers. I realize it is
illegal in the US, but special permits can be obtained to produce it--at
least that is what I understood from my search. The question is why aren't
more people looking at hemp production?
Does anyone have any information on processing hemp into cloth and paper? I
have been told the processing is environmentally unfriendly because of the
chemicals required to breakdown the cells, especially when dealing with
cloth production. How was it processed historically--I'm told that was very
labor intensive. All this is hearsay, not references to processing, either
now or historically.
Thanks for any information you can provide, especially on the production
end.
