killer weed

Dave B. - you sent a response which I think indicated that the
proposed GE solution to Striga was herbicide-resistant sorghum. Do I
have that right? Now there is a really very VERY bad idea - but I
suspect even the GE people won't touch that one.

While sorghum is a key crop in parts of Africa, it also freely
hybridizes with wild species, one of which - Johnsongrass - is among
the ten worst weeds in the world. I think it was Norm Ellstrand (and
others) who has documented the ease with which genes move among the
various species. It was suggested some time ago that sorghum NOT be
subjected to GE specifically because of the likelihood of genes,
including herbicide-resistance genes, moving directly into serious
weeds, making them virtually unstoppable.

If I've got all this right, then what in the world was Glickman
thinking of? Ann
