Had an interesting experience recently. The government put together a group
to debate the issues of genetic engineering. Initial proposal was 2
representatives of the bio tech industry, 4 academic scientists and 2
NGO/antiGMO representatives. Due to popular pressure they took 2 positions
off the scientists and gave them to the NGOs. Screams from the academics
whose honour had been impugned. And I have to say I agreed with the
academics. Spent all my life in academic circles and was a firm believer in
academic neutrality. Silly me. Went to the debates and if they hadn't
changed it would have been a straight 6:2 campaigning ratio. Heard far more
misused statistics from the very senior indeed academics than from the
overt biotech publicity people. I work in another advisory body with
biotech representatives, govt representatives and more of the peer reviewed
productive scientists and I find the guys with the commercial interest are
far more open to argument than the ones who are going ahead through sheer
blind faith.
