Deb,

The squash vine borer, Melittia cucurbitae (Harris), can be
controlled in a number of organic ways. Crop rotation is very important
as the borers tend not to travel far and typically become a problem for
squash plantations that have occupied the same space for a number of
years. Aluminum foil wrapped around the stems from just below ground
level to about six inches will discourage the borers. I have saved some
vines by surgically removing the larvae and then mounding earth over the
damaged stems.
