Direct Marketing of Agricultural Products Meeting Slated

An outdoor field day has been planned by the Jefferson County Land Trust to
explore niche and direct marketing of agricultural products. The meeting
will be held on Wednesday June 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Prairie Dock
Farm, W5412 River Dale Drive, Watertown. River Dale Drive is just south of
Watertown off County Road A.
Dave Engel, Program Director of the Organic Crop Improvement Association
(OCIA), Chapter 1 will be first on the agenda. Mr. Engel will discuss the
organic certification process and give an update on the federal rules for
organic products and the second draft of the American Organic Standards.
Engel's presentation should be of interest to organic farmers who direct
market their products and also to conventional farmers who might be
interested in marketing grain crops in the lucrative organic market. Sharon
International grain elevator estimates that they will be paying double the
regular market price for certified organic soybeans.
Karen Kerr of Bull Thistle Farm will speak about heritage animals and the
direct marketing of beef. She will have several animals on display and will
discuss the valuable qualities of these once predominant breeds and how they
are useful today.
Greg David will give a tour of Prairie Dock Farm. Greg is the proprietor
of a Community Supported Agriculture Farm (CSA). CSA farms provide produce
seasonally or year round to a group of subscribers, some of whom participate
in working the farm. Prairie Dock Farm produces organic vegetables,
chicken, pork, herbs, flowers and prairie plants.
Please join us for an afternoon in the country. For more information
contact Greg David at 920-261-4292. The Jefferson County Land Trust is a
non-profit, non-governmental conservation organization which provides
voluntary land protection options for land owners. The monthly educational
sessions are funded by grants from the Herbert H. Kohl Charities and the
Natural Resources Foundation.
