Re: Rapeseed Oil

I think the "unfit for human consumption" angle comes from the production of two very distinct types of canola, or rapeseed, oil. High erucic acid rape is valuable as an industrial oil, but is toxic. By the way, this is an example of pollen-pollution that predates the GE-wars debate. I have heard that some jurisdictions mandate the growing of only one type of canola (either industrial or culinary), in order to avoid cross-pollination of the two --> which would produce rapeseed useless for either application.

Maybe a crop scientist out there will write in with a more precise description of this, but I've certainly heard no rumours of an impending canola ban!
