Ostrich:
=20
You hear so much about the negative aspects of chicken and beef industry =
feeding all sorts of things to their animals to gain weight faster (not =
necessarily safer).
Why has the Ostrich been such a guarded secret?
=20
We raise the Ostrich and have some 250 large birds. Our birds are as =
close to "organically raised birds" as is possible. The diet of the =
Ostrich contains no hormones, steroids or growth additives. We grind =
and mix (corn, alfalfa pellets, soy bean meal, hay which we raise, and =
vitamins and minerals) our own feed. The ostrich also graze on grass. In =
addition we choose not to feed any animal byproducts from other animals, =
fish, bone or blood meal. The fresh and frozen meat has no =
preservatives.
=20
Of the birds we raised last year, one of the 90 day old birds weighed 90 =
pounds. With natural weight gain like this is it is unnecessary to have =
any "artificial boosters." (That would only create leg problems!) The =
birds weigh about 240 -260 pounds in 12-14 months at the time of =
processing. The meat is a dark red meat, high in Iron, lower in =
calories (140 vs. 211) for beef and 97% fat free. Ostriches do have fat =
which is outside of the muscles unlike beef which stores fat in the =
muscle (marbling). I almost forgot to mention that it is also a very =
good tasting meat.
=20
When the concept of eating a "safe, organically raised meat" finally =
"catches on" with the public, the world will be a better and safer =
place. To learn more about the Ostrich alternative to red meat and =
poultry you are welcome to visit our ranch, the JC Ostrich Ranch in =
Danielsville, GA or visit our web page www.jcranch.com.
