I think its fair to say that the jury is out on bone meal as feed source, for
organic non-ruminants or otherwise. While accepted for conventional
non-ruminants, the BSE issue continues on, as Robert Stauber recently wrote:
" Post Oprah ( the Texas Cattlemens suit against Oprah Winfrey-Howard Lyman)
Very little reporting has been done on this critical issue,
even though we have sheep, deer and elk infected with their version of the
disease here in the US. Since 30 year old Doug McEwen died in Utah there
is concern that the mad cow type disease that is epidemic in deer and elk
in some areas of the west may be moving into humans. Cattle blood plasma
is routinely fed to calves in milk replacer. Over the counter supplements
contain hundreds of milligrams of 'raw bovine pituitary' with no consumer
awareness of the risks of consuming brain. Etc., etc.
