"U.K. Study Dismisses Research Faulting Genetically Altered
Food." Wall Street Journal, 19 May 99, A8.
A report by Britain's prestigious scientific authority, the
Royal Society, "is likely to renew furor over genetically
modified food" because it dismissed "highly publicized
research" by Dr. Arpad Pusztai which indicated that humans
could experience harmful effects from eating altered foods.
Teams of scientists from the Royal Society independently
reviewed Dr. Pusztai's research and reported that it was
'"flawed'" and that '"no conclusion should be drawn from
it'". Dr. Pusztai, who was dismissed from his post at the
Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen after appearing on
T.V., examined the effects of altered potatoes on laboratory
rats. The government supports further testing and is not
expected to call for a moratorium on genetically modified
foods.
