I also want to write the praises of the Wallace Institute, Kellogg and Pew.

Garth Youngberg, the Institute's director, has steadfastly worked on behalf
of organic and sustainable farmers since I first crossed paths with him in
the early 80s. Garth (who plans to retire soon) has hired a talented and
dedicated staff to keep track of cutting edge policy relevant to
sustainable agriculture and make sure that those of us working with the
Midwest Sustainable Agriculture Working Group and other SAWGs are kept
appraised of the DC scene. His staff includes Kate Clancy, food systems
researcher; Elizabeth Higgins, formerly of MSAWG's DC office and working
in part on whole farm planning issues; Kathleen Merrigan, formerly on Sen.
Leahy's staff and working on organic issues (she may have left or be on
sabatical now).

Kellogg and Pew fund a lot of very important work in the sustainable
agriculture movement, in addition to supporting the Wallace Institute.
Their projects include the Integrated Food and Farming Systems project - 17
or so wonderful projects spread out around the country, endowed sustainable
ag chairs at various Universities, a five-state project to promote
pesticide reduction, food system projects around the country, and CSARE, a
consortium of university faculty around the country who are committed to
sustainable agriculture research and education. Without foundations like
Kellogg and Pew, we would be hard-pressed to gain the momentum necessary to
achieve our sustainability goals.
