No, Guiliani doesn't deserve any credit. He only accepted the deal
after a judge's injunction forced him to put off the auction to at
least next fall, and the city would have had to jump through plenty
of hoops to do it by then. Our mayor doesn't do anything he doesn't
want to do (including give out routine information on the actions of
his administration to other elected officials) without an injunction,
subpoena, or other court order. He couldn't sell to the Trust for
Public Land alone without losing major face at that point, since he
had just turned down their offer the previous week.

Bette saved his butt, and the gardens into the bargain. If you can
get hold of it, Saturday's Op-Art on the NYT's Op-Ed page tells the
whole story in 6 frames.

And oh my yes, I'd love to see Bette run for mayor. (Far more than
any other national celebrity currently threatening to run for a NY
office, naming no names.)
