SANet:

I don't know anything about this group, but this looks like an opportunity
to highlight sustainable solutions under the agriculture link at

ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR CASE STUDIES

HORIZON Solutions Site Formal Launching at United Nations

http://www.solutions-site.org

An effort to better conditions throughout the world by finding what can
be and is being done to help protect and improve life on earth, and
making that information available for others to benefit, is underway.
The interactive HORIZON Solutions Site at www.solutions-site.org
provides readily accessible peer reviewed answers to problems in
environment, health, population and development. Harvard and Yale
universities, the International Development Research Centre of Canada,
the United Nations Development Programme, Environment Programme,
Population Fund, and UNICEF are collaborating with HORIZON on the Site.
Participation in the Solutions Site is invited from individuals and
institutions throughout the world. Case studies can be submitted
directly from the Internet site.

United Nations Development Programme Administrator, James Gustave Speth
hosted a special event with an accompanying exhibit for the formal
launching of the Solutions Site on April 14th at the United Nations. Mr.
Speth praised HORIZON's twenty years of work with case studies on
solutions and emphasized the importance of using the information
technologies especially for developing countries and to empower poor
communities to identify and achieve development goals.

The case studies include information on the background of the problem
being addressed; how and by whom the solution was initiated; how long it
has been underway; how well it is working; constraining factors such as
costs, limitations of materials; applicability and feasibility for
replication locally, regionally, internationally; evaluation results, if
any, and by whom the evaluation was conducted; photographs, graphic and
other visual materials; and, resources and contacts for further
information.

HORIZON is providing opportunities for students, graduates, and faculty
to participate in these important international endeavors. Many students
may find that their thesis or research involves a project that would be
a good candidate for possible inclusion in the Solutions Site, and
others might find they would like to work with HORIZON as a summer
intern or apply for a position at a regional base. Faculty might find
their work applicable to share with the world through the Solutions Site
or that they would like to use the Solutions Site as a tool for their
students.

As HORIZON states in its brochure: "It is not enough to chronicle the
problems and provide random reports on successful efforts. There is a
crucial need for carefully researched, documented and disseminated
information about solutions. People need to know what can be and is
being done to protect and improve life on earth and to have the
knowledge to be able to replicate, all or in part, solutions to meet
their own needs."

Based at Harvard and Yale universities, and in Sweden, HORIZON
Communications is an organization dedicated to fostering solutions to
problems in the areas of environment, health, population and
development. It does so by discovering successful problem-solving
initiatives from all parts of the world in both high and low technology,
documenting their validity and feasibility with the help of HORIZON's
Scientific Review Board and other experts, and disseminating the
information through HORIZON's international television series, One
Second Before Sunrise, hosted and narrated by Lynn Redgrave, Sam
Waterston and others, and multimedia materials, and the HORIZON
Solutions Site. HORIZON also works on developing new initiatives that
incorporate successful approaches and technologies and address common
world problems.
