Roly-poly plague

Dear SANET,
I remember that there was a discussion about roly-poly bugs a few months
ago, though I can't seem to find the references. A man here in San
Cristobal has a serious problem with them in his orchid house. He has a
remarkable collection and is hoping to work with communities here for
orchid conservation and tourism. I think of roly-polies as more a nuisance
than a plague but he tells me that they come out en masse in the night and
inflight considerable damage on the productive potential of his orchids by
nibbling on the grwoing root tips. This impedes growth and flowering.
This "dry season" has been more humid than usual (fortunately) but this has
increased the problems as the roly-polies thrive. He has tried a number of
obvious solutions (chile, garlic sprays etc.) but desparate form something
more effective that does not involve the use of poisons. Can anyone help us
with this problem?
