I want to second Gaby Imberman's comments re: the Divine Intervention.
While we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to those who collaborated to
purchase the gardens, we've had to witness the disgusting spectacle of
"our" Mayor holding these gardens for ransom. His henchmen are describing
this as a "win-win situation," because the amount of money they extorted
for these properties was well over the minimum bid anticipated. I haven't
seen anyone comment on this, but the other thing Giuliani's administration
achieved was a series of editorials in which the city's major papers have
gone on record stating that "if these properties were guaranteed to be used
for housing, then the gardens might need to go." Now the HPD is targeting
about 350 gardens for housing -- and we've given them a ready-made argument
to use.

Those "real heroes," the gardeners who created the movement, are already
girding for the next battle. Stay tuned.
