Phil:

USDA's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program has
funded several projects looking at weed control, but one in particular
looks at tilling after dark. In 1994, a Cornell scientist received SARE
funds to conduct the following project:

"Integrating New Cultivation Technology and Photocontrol of Weeds
to Reduce Herbicide Use in Vegetables"

View a brief summary of results at
http://www.sarep.ucdavis.edu/cgi-win/sare/sare.exe/id=1014
The summary includes contact information for the principal investigator.

Through SARE's Sustainable Agriculture Network, (SAN), we published an
entire book on weed control, Steel in the Field: a Farmer's Guide to Weed
Management Tools. Steel in the Field shows how today's implements and
techniques can control weeds while reducing -- or eliminating --
herbicides. See http://www.sare.org/htdocs/pubs/
