The Dept. of Food & Agriculture has threatened to eliminate the
Certified Farmers=3D Market Program IF legislation funding the =
Department
does not pass.
The threat is contained in the proposed regulations which go to hearing
on May 5th in Torrance and May 7th in Stockton (see below). The section
was added to the proposed regulations without the knowledge of the
Certified Farmers=3D Market Advisory Committee.
The proposed regulation is section 1392.1.2, which states that the
present regulations will expire on January 1, 2000 if proposed
legislation, Assembly Bill 593, is not passed. SFMA believes that the
regulations should remain intact, allowing the program to continue, =
even
if the department does not receive funding through legislation.=20
The present regulations grant farmers at Certified Farmers=3D Markets =
and
roadside stands exemptions from standard pack, grading and labeling
requirements. Repealing the legislation would not only eliminate
Certified Farmers=3D Markets - it would also eliminate exemptions for
roadside stands.=20
