Designing Farms For A Future That Matters, using Permanent Agriculture and
Holistic Management. May 26 to 29, 1999
A 4-day intensive instruction and demonstration of creating profitable farm
enterprises that sustain us economically, environmentally, socially and
emotionally. With Joel Salatin, Andy Lee, and Preston Sullivan.
Designing sustainable farms begins with determining the quality of life the
farmer wants for self and family. Too many farmers are alienated from
themselves, from the land and from their families by time, markets, debt and
"modern" farming practices. Year by year farms go out of business, families
divide, and the health and vitality of our communities and our soils
declines. Its not enough to have just a business plan. We need instead a
"quality of life" plan, that enables us to enjoy the people and the land
that sustains us.
Persons who will want to attend this course include farmers and market
gardeners, extension and agricultural development personnel, college and
university faculty, and sustainable agriculture advocates.
Joel Salatin is the author of Salad Bar Beef, Pastured Poultry Profits and
You Can Farm. He raises salad bar beef, pigerator pork, pastured broilers,
turkeys and rabbits, to sell to over 400 families and dozens of stores and
restaurants in central Virginia.
Andy Lee is the author of Backyard Market Gardening and Chicken Tractor. He
raises grass beef, bush hogs, free-range broilers and roasters and turkeys,
asparagus and strawberries to sell through his farm shop. He researches
breeder flocks of Rock Cross broilers and Sweetgrass turkeys and is building
a VDACS inspected poultry processing facility at his farm.
Preston Sullivan, Ph.D Agronomy, is a project director at ATTRA. He is a
certified educator in holistic management, and has studied for many years
with HM founder Alan Savory.
Tuition $485 ($585 after May 5th) includes books, lunches and farm tours of
Lee's Good Earth Farm and Salatin's Polyface Farm.
