slugs & snails

I hope you get lots of responses on this, but here's a start. The
organic methods I know about are 1) using wood ash as it cuts the
bodies of the offending slugs/snails (but will obviously need to be
reapplied if it rains and therefore would be unsuitable with overhead
watering) and 2) using traps like beer bottles with some beer inside
which lures the creatures in and then they can't get out. Again, the
size of the guy's operation might make this not so desirable. But
maybe some of the principles could be used in different ways. Live
ducks might also be a help.
