sustainability and the organic myth

Rich et al:

I agree with you that diversity of production is key, and that proper
integration of animals into cropping systems, be they vegetable or grain,
is a very convenient (profitable and widely adaptable) way to move a step
closer to sustainability, (not, of course, the only way.)

But here goes: I wonder how well organic production (I guess I'm thinking
vegetable production in particular) works without the integration of
animals in some form (trucked in manure, blood meal, bone meal... animals
present on farm...) especially in terms of profitability.

Any thoughts?
