Killing rye

friends - we grow vegetables on our organic farm in SE Ohio and I usually
cover the fields in Fall with rye. Problem is it's hard to kill in the
Spring. I always till it as soon as I can get into the fields, but
recently I read that rye doesn't come back after tilling if you wait until
its over eight inches tall before tilling. This was news to me, and it's
hard to believe. Anyone out there have an explanation for this?
