nitrogen scavenging plants

Dear SANETers:
I recall someone looking for a non-nodulating alfalfa for
scavenging excess nitrogen. There was much discussion about why one
would want such a plant but don't remember any such alfalfa being
reported. I just ran across a statement in Peaceful Valley's catalog
description for TriosTriticale (Triticum X Secale) which is described as
having an aggressive root system: "Use this crop to uptake excess
nitrogen." Maybe this would do the job.
