Last October, the Organic Farming Research Foundation, the Henry A. Wallace
Institute for Alternative Agriculture and USDA’s Sustainable Agriculture
Research & Education (SARE) & Economic Research Service (ERS) programs
co-sponsored a workshop to explore the current status of organic farming
research being done within different branches of USDA, as well as projects
underway outside of USDA’s system.
OFRF instigated the workshop as a first step in developing its new
collaborative project, the Scientific Congress on Organic Agriculture
Research (SCOAR). See the OFRF web site for more on the SCOAR project:
<http://www.ofrf.org/policy/scoar/scoards.html>. More SCOAR meetings of
this type will be occurring in 1999.
More than anything, the workshop was an opportunity for anyone interested
in sharing what they were working on, in terms of organic research or
analysis (and could pull something together on relatively short notice).
Despite the tight time frame of the workshop’s planning, a surprisingly
broad range of reserach and data-collection efforts were presented.
Here is the list of speakers from the workshop. The current posting on the
web site contains short abstracts for each presentation. The complete
transcript of the presentations, including charts and most handouts will
soon be available from OFRF.
