But, I find myself in a hard position on this one. I don't grow your
standard organic fare...vegetables or even fruit or grains. I grow cut
flowers and to be profitable I need to grow cutting varieties and, most
importantly, lots of "unusual" things. I grow as much as I can from seed
which means I don't have many seed sources to choose from when it comes
to most of my flowers. I save seed when I can which isn't often given my
small growing space (isolation issues) and my limited time....
I like to think (perhaps foolishly) that when I deal with seed companies
that focus only on "ornamentals" I don't have to worry about GMO issue
(since it seems the $ is in GE food and major textile crops and thus
that's what's getting GE'ed...of course this says nothing about what
those ssed companies would buy if they could...) But, I figure it's only a
matter of time till someone thinks it'd be nifty to GE some "ornamental"
crop...
I hate living in this compromised world and having to make compromises...
I think co-operative seed saving ventures are a great idea but seed is so
important, we need to have lots of og folks doing it full time, not part
time or on the side.... And, of course, I want to see seed of
"ornamentals" saved too....:-)
So, knowing I don't have that many choices of seed sources so long as I
choose to grow "flowers" I still think there is something I can be doing,
even if I can't always let my $ do the talking, and that would be to speak
up more...Okay yall have convinced me I should do some more speaking
up....I'll try though really and truly I prefer talking to my neighbor :-)
