Pesticides in Food

The March issue of Consumer Reports contains an important article on
pesticide residues in food. The article, and accompanying technical report,
is being released in N.Y. City tomorrow (2/18), 9 a.m. EST; stories will
begin appearing in papers Friday. Its likely to trigger much interest.

Some people will find it hard to reconcile what CU found and reports
and the "conventional wisdom" regarding pesticide dietary risks. Anyone who
is curious and/or interested in pursuing a dialogue on the article, its
findings, data, methodologies should obtain both the article and the 71 page
technical report. The technical report can be printed from the CU FQPA
website. Go to www.ecologic-ipm.com, to What's New, and you will find the
report. It is also on the CU Advocacy website at <www.consunion.org; go to
section on food safety issues>. You'll need the Adobe Acrobat reader to get
the report. The issue is arriving in people's homes in the next few days,
and will be on newsstands in about 10 days.

The Consumer Reports article and data in the technical report
provide the most comprehensive assessment carried out to date on residues in
imported and domestic foods. The results are not what we expected and will
be surprising to many people.

I would appreciate any help from colleagues on this list in
spreading the word about the availability of the article and report. It is
the result of an extensive analysis and sheds important light on the
relatively few foods and pesticides that account for the lion's share of
risk to infants and children.
