Request for Technical Expertise on Controlling Agricultural Weeds
Without Chemical Herbicides
Summary
The Maryland Food and Farming Association (non-profit all volunteer
organization) seeks technical or agricultural research expertise to
provide written or live testimony on why organic farmers should not be
subject to a noxious weed law policy that could require them to spray
their fields with chemical herbicides. The Maryland State Senate has a
hearing on SB 227 Tuesday Feb. 16 from 1-5 PM in Hearing Room 200 of the
Senate Office Building in Annapolis. Further testimony may be required
if the House of Delegates holds hearings as well.
The Issue
The Maryland Organic Food and Farming Association (MOFFA) is supporting
Maryland Senate Bill 227 regarding the relationship between organic
farming practices and the control of noxious weeds required by Maryland
State law. The issue is:
Under what circumstances could the Maryland Department of Agriculture
(MDA) require a certified organic farmer to use a synthetic chemical
herbicide, such as Roundup, to control noxious weeds.
In more legalistic terms, the issue could be restated as:
What constitutes compliance with the Maryland Noxious Weed law (NW) for
an organic farmer?
If MDA required an organic farmer to use a synthetic chemical herbicide
to control noxious weeds, then the chemically treated area would have to
be put into a three transitional status before it could be again
certified as organic. Obviously, no organic farmer wants to be
threatened with losing partial or complete certification.
