I seem to recall having read last year that these tomatoes were the famous "flavr-savr" tomatoes that, for a variety of reasons, didn't catch on in the fresh market. I don't recall a market share percentage being quoted, but only that they were gaining in popularity because they were favourably priced (and, of course, had acceptable culinary characteristics, too).
