We would like to extend and invitation to you and your students to visit our
farm, Kiwi Korners, in Northeast Pennsylvania. We are a family farm
research, production and extension site targeting a new small fruit crop
hardy kiwi, A. Arguta. We market them under the trade name "Kiwi Berries".
We are not "certified" organic but we practice low impact, sustainable
farming without the use of herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides.
In the raised beds, we use basic organic nutrients, kelp, fish, soft rock
phosphate, etc. to maintain our soil health.
We are in the process of trials on over fifty different varieties which
possibly represent the world's largest germplasm repository.
Kiwi Korners development site originated in 1987, encompasses 11-1/2 acres
and arbors over 3000 vines. The multi-cultivars are trialed for
micro-climate adaptation/hybridization and are evaluated for viability,
productivity, and marketability.
The trellis system is in a T-bar configuration ranging from 500 to 600 feet
in row length and is organized in 2-1/2 acre blocks of twelve rows each.
The location of these blocks provide us with two separate micro-climates.
You are welcome to visit any time from May 9th through My 15th. At this
point the vines should be in flower formation, and you may find our
intercropping trials of ginseng, day neutral strawberries and varieties of
aisle grass of interest.
Our location is approximately forty minutes west of the intersection of
Interstates 80 & 81 in Pennsylvania. You would be taking the Danville exit
33 on Interstate 80, and the farm is located just 20 minutes from there.
If you have an interest in visiting us or desire any additional information,
please do not hesitate to contact us at kiwikrnr@ptd.net or by telephone at
(570)275-8781.
We wish you a safe journey and will look forward to hearing from you.
