I reported this to Andy earlier this week after getting this message
myself. The error message doesn't appear to be from the SANET
mail-bot. Unless I'm mistaken, Lyris is a list server for another
organization.
What this error message indicated to me is that, somehow,
Lyris-the-list-server-address got subscribed to SANET-the-list as an
though it were an individual e-mail address. While individual e-mail
addresses can both send and receive e-mail, that isn't necessarily
true for list servers.
Some list servers have a RESTRICTED feature where they will only
accept messages from subscribers. If you aren't subscribed, and send
a message to it, your message is bounced back to you with an error
message--sorry, you're not a subscriber, your message has been
forwarded to the list administrator, or you're not a subscriber, get
lost, bucko. Lyris's error message indicates that it is one of the
list servers with that feature on it. Only subscribers can post.
So. When any of us sends a message to SANET, Lyris gets it, and we
get the automatic error message. We aren't subscribed to
Lyris--we're subscribed to SANET. Which goes to prove that these
computers are *not* talking behind our backs, after all. :^)
Perhaps someone at Lyris set this up as a way for their list to echo
SANET, or perhaps it was a mistake in their subscribing to SANET.
This doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with SANET
traffic. In fact, my guess is that SANET is running just fine, as it
is 99% of the time. (I wish I could have run GRAZE-L nearly as
perfectly as SANET runs when we hosted the mirror site!!!)
As for pauses and hiccups, remember that different e-mail accounts
on different servers may get list server traffic at different times.
For example, there are many times I post something to the list and
get a response from someone before my posting has reached me. E-mail
goes through a vast labyrinth of gateways, servers, etc., and there
are bogs n squishy places in those. Your server can burp, and
someone sends you e-mail just then...and it bounces back to them
saying, sorry, that server doesn't exist.
