Gary,
thank you for perservering in your arguments about the potential
seriousness of and opportunity provided by the Y2K situation. I wasn't
that worried about it myself (because I live in a very low-tech off the
grid situation with water on my property and I planned to stock up on
food and firewood), until a local radio call-in program alerted me to
the idea of COMMUNITY preparedness and the vulnerablitiy of the sick,
the elderly and the ill-prepared. I have been vaguely annoyed at
various commentaries I have heard (on my local public radio station)
that belittle the potential effects (won't it be neat, just like the
olden days!) because they ignore the pain and suffering that many people
could experience. I plan to bring the topic up at our town meeting in
March, in the hopes of creating a committee to prepare to help others in
our community. Even if there are no interuptions of power or food
supply or gasoline we will have at least gotten to know each other
better, and it is an opportunity to talk about strengthening all sorts
of local systems, including the food system.
